UNDERTONE DRIVE : Operation & Sound Design Guide

Global Transport & Sequencing

Master the core clock and the 256-step old-school sequencer of the Undertone Drive.

Gain Staging Note: The audio architecture is strictly calibrated at -18 dBFS to match the standard studio reference (0 VU). Adjust the Master Bus Volume to ensure the VU meter peaks in this safe zone to preserve pristine digital headroom.

Global Controls

  • MASTER PLAY: Click or press SPACEBAR to engage the non-throttled Web Worker master clock.
  • FULL RESET: Click to flush all buffers and completely re-initialize the DSP engine. Destructive action.
  • AUTO GROOVE: Triggers the Smart Gen algorithm. Press TAB to instantly load the next optimized polyrhythmic pattern.
  • TEMPO: Adjust from 60 to 200 BPM via the slider or direct numerical input.
  • HD EXPORT: WAV and MIDI export suites. Note: These are premium features and may be disabled depending on your license.

256-Step Sequencer

  • LOOP PAGES: Extend the sequence length from 1 Page (16 steps) up to 16 PAGES (256 steps).
  • PER-STEP VELOCITY: Each step features an independent vertical slider to program precise dynamics from 0.0 to 1.0.
Pro Tip: Enable the AUTO-FOLLOW checkbox next to the pagination menu to automatically snap your grid view to the currently playing 16-step block.

Polyharmonic Synthesis Engine

Generate massive sub-harmonics and complex waveforms using dual additive engines and frequency dividers.

Engine 1: Master VCO & Harmonics

  • VCO 1 (MASTER): Controls the fundamental pitch. Select from 6 algorithms: SAWTOOTH, SQUARE, FM DIGITAL, HARD PUNCH, DEEP SUB, or TITAN KICK.
  • TUNE OFFSET: Detune the entire engine globally from -24 to +24 semitones.
  • SUB 1 & SUB 2: Two sub-oscillators. Adjust the division ratio from f/1 down to f/16 to synthesize extreme, chest-rattling low-end.

Engine 2: Secondary VCO & Harmonics

  • VCO 2 (DETUNED): Operates in parallel with the same 6 waveforms. Adjust the INTERVAL slider (-24 to +24 ST) to create massive phase beating, fifth chords, or wide textures.
  • SUB 3 & SUB 4: Dedicated frequency dividers for the secondary oscillator to thicken the overall wall of sound.

Audition Pads & Spectrum

  • ROOT & OCTAVE: Define the base note (C to B) and octave (1 to 5) for the audition engine.
  • QWERTY PIANO: Use your computer keyboard (Middle row = White keys, Top row = Black keys) to audition your sound design in real-time.

Device Control Dashboard

Sculpt transients, frequency responses, and dynamic contours using the real-time DSP dashboard and high-resolution Canvas HUDs.

Shape, Noise & Filters

  • SHAPE & NOISE: Push the PITCH DROP up to 48 ST with a fast DROP DECAY to synthesize aggressive analog kick impacts. Add SUSTAIN NOISE to inject organic grit.
  • 24dB LADDER VCF: Toggle between Low Pass and High Pass. Set the CUTOFF (20 to 12000 Hz) and increase RESONANCE up to 15 to force self-oscillation. Modulate it with the EG AMOUNT (±8000 Hz).

Dual Envelopes (ADSR)

  • FILTER ENVELOPE (VCF): Shapes the cutoff frequency over time. Features an ultra-fast Attack (down to 1ms) for snappy plucks.
  • AMP ENVELOPE (VCA): Shapes the global volume. Push the RELEASE up to 5 seconds to create long, evolving drone textures.

FX Sends & Master Tape

  • SENDS: Dial in the perfect amount of CHORUS, DELAY, and REVERB (0 to 100%).
  • MASTER TAPE SATURATION: Engage the virtual tape. Select the speed (30 IPS or 15 IPS) and formula (MODERN, VINTAGE, CLASSIC), then push the TAPE GAIN to musically saturate the transients.

Polyrhythms & Master Bus

Break the standard 4/4 grid using math-based clock dividers, and finalize your mix in-the-box.

Polyrhythm Generators

  • R1 to R4: Four independent mathematical clocks. Set a divisor (DIV 1 to 16) for each rhythm generator.
  • ROUTING MATRIX: Route any of the 4 generators to SEQ 1 to advance the grid steps, or to SEQ 2 to trigger intense ratchets and re-triggers on the current step.

Master Bus Strip & Visuals

  • OSCILLOSCOPE: A high-resolution FFT canvas displaying real-time waveform data directly above the master bus.
  • 3-BAND EQ: Surgical ±15dB cuts/boosts for LOW, MID, and HIGH frequencies on the master output.
  • BUS COMPRESSOR: A fixed 4:1 ratio VCA compressor. Lower the THRESHOLD (-40 to 0dB) to catch stray peaks and push the MAKEUP GAIN (0 to +12dB) to glue the rhythm track together.
Pro Tip: Always keep an eye on the dedicated Master VU-meter. The green bar indicates your signal is healthy. If you hit 0 PEAK, back off the Master Volume or lower the Compressor Makeup Gain to prevent digital clipping!
