FORGED LABS 03: Operation & Sound Design Guide
Quick Start & Global Transport
Forged Labs 03 is a unified 128-step sequencing environment. Here is how to navigate the master controls.
Gain Staging Note: The audio engine is calibrated at -18 dBFS to match the standard studio reference (0 VU). This ensures optimal headroom when integrating your patterns into your DAW without any risk of inter-sample clipping.
The 5-Minute Quick Start
- Reset: Click
FULL RESETto clear all buffers and initialize the engine. - Play: Press
MASTER PLAYto engage the non-throttled Web Worker clock. - Generate: Click
AUTO GROOVE (SMART GEN)to instantly populate a mathematically optimized multi-genre pattern. - Export: Click
EXPORT MIDIto download a structured, multi-channel .mid file mapped for your DAW.
Pro Tip (Workflow): Speed up your sequencing! You can instantly switch your Inspector focus from Track 1 to Track 8 by pressing the corresponding numbers 1 through 8 on your computer keyboard's numeric keypad.
Global Controls & Pagination
- TEMPO (60-200 BPM): Adjusts the master clock. Can be set via the slider or by typing directly into the numeric field.
- LOOP LENGTH: Defines the active playback cycle, from 1 Page (16 steps) up to 8 Pages (128 steps).
- PAGE SELECTORS (1-8): The 8 numbered buttons allow you to view and edit specific 16-step blocks within your loop.
- GLOBAL TRANSPOSE: Shifts the pitch of the entire FM Tone and Acid T3 engines simultaneously (from -24 to +24 semitones) without affecting the drum mapping.
- MUTE ACTIVE ENGINE: Instantly kills the audio output of the currently viewed engine (Drums, Synths, or Acid) for quick arrangement testing.
Drum Factory: Subtractive & Metallic Engine
An 8-track drum machine combining synthesized waveforms and procedural noise matrices.
Track Profiles (T1 to T8)
Each track offers specific physical models (e.g., T9, T8, Reverse) accessible via the dropdown menu next to the track name.
- t1 (KICK): Combines a rapidly descending sub-oscillator sweep with a sharp transient click for low-end punch.
- t2 (SNARE): Merges a descending body waveform with a filtered noise burst. Features an independent decay envelope to simulate snare wire rattling.
- t3 (TOM): A tuned low-mid oscillator utilizing a fixed pitch-drop algorithm for percussive impact.
- t4 (CLAP): A band-passed noise generator triggering a micro-cascade of staggered volume spikes to emulate multiple hands clapping.
- t5 (RIM/BELL): Dual-square wave detuning pushed through a highly resonant bandpass filter. (Also features an FM Bell option for pure frequency modulation).
- t6, t7 & t8 (CYMBALS): Avoids standard white noise. Instead, it sums an array of 8 detuned fixed oscillators through a surgical high-pass filter to achieve a pure, authentic metallic timbre.
Master Drum Bus
All drum tracks are routed through a master processing chain, ending with a tape-style saturation waveshaper.
- DRUMS BUS VOL: Master output level. Crucial: Adjust this so the VU meter peaks at the green indicator (-18 dBFS / 0 VU) to maintain pristine digital headroom.
- 3-BAND EQ: Low-shelf, peaking mid, and high-shelf filters (-12dB to +12dB) to shape the overall kit.
- BUS COMPRESSOR (4:1): Glues the kit together. Set the
THRESHOLDto catch peaks, and useMAKEUP GAINto restore perceived loudness before the waveshaper saturates the signal.
Device Control Dashboard (Drum Inspector)
Click the Settings (Gear) icon on any step, or the Sliders icon on the track header to open the Inspector.
- SHAPE & TONE:
LP FILTER(cuts high frequencies),HP FILTER(removes mud),TRANSPOSE(shifts pitch in semitones), andLENGTH(a global multiplier for the decay/release times). - ARPEGGIATOR: Turn
ONto trigger sub-rhythms within a single step. Select theMode(Up, Down, Cycle) and theRate(from 1/4 notes to 1/64 triplets). - ENVELOPES:
VEL/GAINsets the step volume.PITCH OFFSETalters the specific step's tuning.ATTACK,DECAY,SUSTAIN, andRELEASE(ADSR) surgically sculpt the amplitude contour of the hit. - FX SENDS:
CHORUS,DELAY, andREVERBknobs dictate how much of this specific track is sent to the global return effects.
FM Tone: Linear Frequency Modulation
An 8-track poly-algorithmic synthesizer where a Modulator oscillator shapes a Carrier oscillator at audio rates.
Live Play Mode
When the FM tab is active, use your computer keyboard (keys A through K) to play the active track live. Use the numeric keypad (1 through 8) to instantly switch your target track.
The 6 Synthesis Machines
Selectable in the Inspector, these dictate the core engine topology:
- FM Tone: Classic linear FM. The modulation depth follows the global amplitude envelope.
- FM Drum: High modulation index with a decoupled
Punchenvelope. Perfect for aggressive, clicking percussion. - Wavetone: Combines a sawtooth carrier with a triangle modulator for gritty, complex harmonic generation.
- Swarm: Super-saw emulation using dual sawtooth waves with micro-phase detuning.
- Harmonic FM: Uses specific mathematical ratios (1:1.5) to generate metallic, glassy bell tones.
- FM Sub-Bass: Uses a sub-octave modulator ratio (1:0.5) with a
Punchenvelope to secure massive, stable low-end.
FM Index & Control Dashboard
- FM INDEX: In the FM engine, the
Pitch Slideracts as the master modulation depth. Positive values inject bright harmonics; negative values filter the sound back toward the fundamental sine wave. - ADSR & FILTERS: Functions exactly as the Drum Inspector, allowing you to shape pads (slow attack/release) or plucks (fast attack/decay, zero sustain).
Acid T3: Analog Circuit Modeling
A monophonic synthesizer replicating a classic 303 bassline architecture, featuring a 24dB/octave ladder filter emulation.
Hardware Module Parameters
- TUNE & WAVEFORM: Shift the global pitch (-12 to +12) and select the raw oscillator shape (Sawtooth for rich harmonics, Square for a hollow tone).
- VCF (24dB LADDER): The core filter.
CUTOFFsets the frequency ceiling.RESONANCEcreates the classic squelch.ENV MODdictates how intensely the decay envelope opens the filter. - DECAY (DOUBLE STAGE):
Normal Decaycontrols standard steps.Accent Decayindependently controls the decay time for any step with an Accent value greater than 0. - SUB OSC: Adds a dedicated square wave 1 or 2 octaves below the fundamental.
SOFT ATTACKsmooths the very beginning of the waveform to prevent unwanted clicks. - DISTORTION & TRACKING:
OVERDRIVEsaturates the input stage.MUFFLERapplies a non-linear clipping circuit.KEY TRACKforces the filter cutoff to open wider as you play higher notes. - MODS:
FILTER FMuses the audio oscillator to modulate the filter cutoff at high speeds.SLIDE TIMEsets the exact duration to glide between two tied notes.
Acid Step Inspector
- PITCH MODE (NOTE): Select the target musical note for the step.
- ACCENT LEVEL: From 0.0 to 1.0. Engaging an accent triggers the
Accent Decaycircuit, multiplies the current filterResonanceby 1.5, and forces the VCA amplitude to its maximum. - SLIDE AMOUNT: From 0.0 to 1.0. The sequencer smoothly sweeps the pitch to the next note's value based on your
SLIDE TIMEsetting.
Algorithmic Generation & MIDI Tools
Located below the sequencer, these mathematical tools alter your patterns procedurally.
The 5 Core Algorithms
- Pocket Humanize: Injects micro-timing fluctuations (-7.5ms to +7.5ms) and slight velocity deviations to all active steps, transforming rigid digital grids into organic, human-feeling grooves.
- Poly Procedural: Opens a dedicated panel. Select a target track, an
INTERVAL(e.g., 1 hit every 5 steps), and anOFFSET. This forces complex polyrhythms across the 16-step grid. - True Euclid: Opens the Euclidean generator. Distributes a specific number of
PULSESas evenly as mathematically possible across 16 steps. Use theOFFSETto rotate the starting point of the rhythm. - Velocity Ramp: Detects all active steps on a track and forces them into a perfect linear volume crescendo (fade-in).
- Reset Vel: Flattens the velocity of all active steps back to a maximum 1.0 value.
